What color modes do PNG files support?

Portable Network Graphics, also known as PNG, can support multiple color formats.

  • PNG files support palette-based images, meaning 24-bit RGB, 32-bit RGBA, gray-scale images, and full-color non-palette-based RGB[A] images.
  • PNG files were made to help transfer images to the internet, they were NOT made for high quality printing, so PNG files do not support non-RGB color spaces such as CMYK.
